Spring Turkey Hunt for a Special Wounded Soldier

At the Denver Mile High Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation fundraising banquet this year, Live Auction item #35 was a Spring Turkey Hunt to honor a Wounded Soldier. This hunt was generously purchased for a soldier by Anadarko Petroleum Corporation. On Sunday, April 21st, the RMEF held this hunt for the solider, Nick Orchowski, joined by Blake Pickett – representing Anadarko. The tom turkeys were gobbling at first light and moving to find hens as the two hunters waited for legal light and for a bird to be called in. Blake scored first with a 19 pound 8-1/2 inch bearded turkey. Then shortly afterwards our honored solider, Nick, scored on a very nice tom that weighed 19 pounds and had an 8 inch beard. Although Nick wears leg braces and has no use of his right arm from the wounds he suffered in Iraq from an IED explosion, he quickly said, “I am so excited, I could do a cart wheel right now”. During the February 12th general committee meeting, Blake Pickett of Anadarko Petroleum gave a presentation to our RMEF members in attendance to highlight how involved Anadarko is in terms of habitat conservation and wildlife preservation. Please take a few moments to tune-in to Colorado’s Outdoorsman Radio Show on Saturday, March 9th, from 8:00 – 9:00am on 1600AM – The Zone. Our local RMEF Chairman, Mark Vivien, and Marketing Vice Chariman, Steve Rosch, will be highlighting the upcoming March 23rd Annual Big Game and Fundraising Banquet, as well as the efforts made by the foundation within the State of Colorado in helping to conserve elk and other wildlife habitat.   On the show, Founder and Radio Show Host, Scott Whatley, offers a variety of hunting and fishing experts, outfitters, guns, ammo, and archery specialists to keep Colorado hunters, anglers, and outdoorsman informed of techniques, products, gear, conservation news, and the upcoming seasons.
