Roaring Fork River Valley
The Elk Foundation recently teamed up with the town of Snowmass Village, Pitkin County and the Colorado Divison of Wildlife
in a cooperative study to determine the seasonal range use, migration routes and calving areas for the Burnt Mountain elk herd.
Elk in the Roaring Fork River Valley face increasing pressure from rapid development, ski areas, recreational use, highway construction
and other factors. This study will be used to improve land-use planning and management decisions as the community of Snowmass Village
expands. This is the first study of the area's elk herd using telemetry equipment as a monitoring tool. Whle focused on elk, the study
will benefit other wildlife taht use similar habitat and corridors.
