Wet Mountain Range enhancement
To increase forage on public lands and reduce damage on farmers' nearby alfalfa fields, the Elk Foundation helped fund a project
to burn 200 acres of prime habitat and thin another 789 acres of national forest lands on the east slope of the Wet Mountain
Range northwest of Salida. The project should benefit a resident herd of aobut 150 elk, as well as mule deer, turkeys, and
nesting song-birds. The Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, Colorado Division of Wildlife and Quail Unlimited's
Leadville Chapter also provided funding.
